Archtop vs. flat top acoustic guitars. What is the difference?
I know what they seem. But how (archtops) sounds as compared with a flat top?
It is very hard to characterize and describe the sound of archtops. It is not so bright (like an aircraft carrier) and is a sound I associate with jazz and 40 music and big pop band. It's a great sound, but is not as bright as an aircraft carrier and simple guitar with steel strings. Since F-holes are usually instead of a large sound hole that the sound is not as strong. You really need to try one for yourself. Most music stores as the cheapest Ibanez Artcore Series (one of them myself). The really good Gibson, Heritage, and custom builders like Benedetto, Comins, and Campellone are really instruments gorgeous, perfect for jazz. Now there is a high-end archtop out of China, which, frankly, is not known for its high-end instruments, to say the least. Search a brand called Eastman, hard to find since its dealer network is quite thin at the moment. These are a great buy if you can find one. Good luck.
