how do you tell the difference between rosewood or mahogany back and sides on an acoustic guitar?
what are the grain differences or patterns?
Rosewood and mahogany are radically different in appearance. Mahogany and sapele (plantation grown mahogany) tend to be light brown and have a short grain texture, while rosewood tends to be very dark and almost burgundy in color, often with tan streaks running through it. See the link below.
Many guitars have laminated (plywood) backs and sides, with the outer layer being of the wood described and the remainder being possibly lower quality wood. This, unless the guitar is very carefully built, negates the tonal characteristics of the wood and as such the outer layer is just for looks and often as thin as 0.7mm (3/100″) !
If the PRINTED guitar info from the manufacturer doesn’t specifically say SOLID in the description, then you can bet it is laminated. Some music store salesmen do not know the difference so ALWAYS ask to see the manufacturers info if there is a question. Every manufacturer that I can think of, regardless of price, uses laminates in some of their guitars, so if having a solid wood guitar is important to you, make sure to do your homework.
